A Slow Dance

A Slow Dance

It didn't feel right. It did actually... but I was unsure. I mean, if she felt the same way wouldn't there have been a fluttering of wings or at least twitching of antennas? She was different. I knew. Her movements were more graceful than any other butterfly in the land. Poetry in motion, they said. She just talked and I just watched. Luckily, she didn't realize that I wasn't paying attention to a single word that she was saying. My sensory organs had prioritized themselves. The ears had been numbed by the eyes.

I noticed that she was now looking at me with a stern expression and seemed puzzled due to the stupid grin on my proboscis. How I wish I could just tell her what I was thinking at that point! She asked me the reason for my amusement and I wavered her request, awkwardly, to say the least. She continued to talk and I continued to gaze. Gathering some courage, I decided to make my move and stealthily glided in her direction. I think she realized but seemed to be okay with this new proximity. "Phew! First obstacle cleared", I thought to myself. Not wanting to be too obvious, I put myself into the conversation a bit more and kept asserting myself to stay calm. She just looked at me and smiled.

Unexpectedly, in a single movement, she sighed and let her wing drop close to me... Really close.
I couldn't hold back anymore, it was too tempting to resist. Her gorgeous, quaint wing portrayed some of the best colours a butterfly could wish for. Her beautiful big brown eyes beckoned and I nervously started moving my own wing towards hers. It reached a point where there was a minimal contact. She flinched but was re-assured within the fraction of a second. Gradually, the minimal contact transformed itself into a proper touch. At this point, I placed my wing upon hers. She did not mind but rather afforded me a slight smirk. Gently lifting her wing, I placed a little peck on her antenna. She blushed.

Her wing still in mine, I blurted out... “Would you like to dance with me?" (Too soon, I immediately thought. Talk about instant regret!) Understanding that my emotions had finally gotten the better of me, she just looked into my eyes calmly and said, “We just did, didn't we?”
