Be Here Now.

"You have nothing to do, you have nowhere to be" one of the best quotes I have ever come across till date. At first glance, it might seem the perfect sentence for a vagabond who will just sit around thinking, "Oh! This is wonderful" but it's really not. Dr. Richard Alpert, a former Harvard professor, the guru of Steve Jobs and the author of this book which has changed my entire outlook on life called Be Here Now has given the world this quote. . This book is the journey of Richard Alpert to Baba Ram Dass and the learning he received in this journey. However, today I am not going to tell you about his journey but rather what I learnt by reading this beautiful book.
Humans, a tiny race of beings which have evolved into what is deemed the most intelligent race due to our ability to think and act. I say tiny because the universe we inhabit goes something like this... A billion galaxies, out of which we inhabit one called the Milky Way. Now, the milky way is a spiral, like a spring and our entire solar system is one of the arms of this spring. 9 planets and we have made the 5th largest our home. Do you realize how insignificant we are in the grander scheme of things? We are nothing but a tiny speck of energy and yet there are people who have an ego thinking that everything revolves or should revolve around them. We judge people on their external appearances, we have a sense of pride because of our status and the money we have earned which inexplicably gives us the right to belittle people who were not as fortunate to have the life we have. Wisdom does not come with appearances, age or even status. I believe wisdom comes with experiences and with the ability to think for yourself. If you really look at it, we are all one and the same thing. Specks of energy, emitting energy, receiving energy, using energy and transferring this same energy into another body made of flesh after death. The other day I was telling two of my trainees this... If you ever feel that you have achieved something in life or are feeling superior to anyone just look up at the stars and you will realize how insignificant and equal you are. If you respect yourself, you will respect everyone around you be it someone who begs for a living, a trainee working day in and day out, or your manager who has to get through so much every day. We are all one energy.
Every single day, I see people who come into work and the first thing they say is I cannot wait to go home. It's human tendency to dwell on the good times or the mistakes of the past, and look forward to future situations in which they might think they will be in a happier place but in doing so, we are just neglecting the present moment which is really all that we have. "You have nothing to do, you have nowhere to be" means that you have to focus at the present moment. It's the feeling of being in love! When you are doing something you love, your mind isn't thinking about anything else but is rather completely focused on what you are doing and if you love what you are doing there will be never a moment of unhappiness. A caterpillar cannot leave being a caterpillar and think about being a butterfly, it has to enjoy being a caterpillar and the butterfly will follow. At this very point, all I am thinking about is delivering this speech which is what helps me give it with a hundred percent of my ability and conviction. If every day we wake up without having expectations about how the day is going to go and just breathe through every passing moment, the world will be a satisfied and a very happy place to live in.
In the end, it's all about unconditional love. Just being happy without thinking of the consequences or the outcome. Every day is a mental gymnasium where we train our mind to love and respect every single person and be content with what we have rather than brood about what we don't. It's about centering your thoughts and your mind to smile through it all and just... be here now.
